Montignac is our closest town, and is well worth a stroll through its narrow streets and squares. Coming alive in the warmth of the summer sun, and offering a wide choice of bars and restaurants to savour the French hospitality and friendliness. The town straddles the Vezere River and is home to the World renowned Lascaux caves www.lascaux.culture.fr and with its new facsimile and visitor centre which opened in December 2016, it is always a popular destination, but worth booking online before your visit. Sarlat www.sarlat-tourisme.com a stunning medieval town is just twenty minutes away and is a must for anyone visiting this area, but there are also many small villages worth a visit, most have a bar or restaurant where you can sit and watch the world go by. Market day is always popular, with one every day of the week somewhere close by, details are in the welcome pack at La Grange Mirabelle.
If you are more energetic then the area is perfect for walking, cycling or hiring a canoe on one of the rivers close by. The surrounding area is not flat, but a series of valleys and hills with unspoilt woodlands, many with marked footpaths . For the cyclist, whether road, off road or just leisure the roads are usually well surfaced, and even in the height of summer, not too busy. There are many footpaths off road which are accessible to cyclists as well. For those who prefer to avoid hills, there is the Sarlat Voie Verte, which runs for 23km towards Souillac for the greater part following an old railway track bed, including a tunnel, running alongside the Dordogne river.
